The Foundation license is your entry into amateur radio. The course and exam lead to the license provides you with an exciting introduction to the hobby while requiring an acceptable minimum level of radio skill and experience. You don't need to be Marconi is what that really means. All the radio clubs run the course and the average person should be able to pass this with some hand holding after 8~10 weeks. If you are at all familiar with amateur radio then one of the weekend courses might suit you. I'll get to those later.
Remember that the Foundation license is recognized only by the UK communications regulator OFCOM, and entitles you to a unique call sign which will be used to identify you when you are transmitting. Nowadays you can pick them if they are not already issued. So if you want to be say M6TTT and that's not already in use then it's yours. Simple as. The old system would not issue them out of turn so if you wanted one you'd have to wait for it to come up.
